Summary

You can use amazOOP categories to make querying commonly used AWS browse nodes easier. For instance, if you are only interested in displaying Downloadable Software on your site, why not create a category called software to replace browse node 531448, which is much harder to remember.

AmazOOP comes with several predefined categories for all four supported locales, but you are free to add, remove or modify as many as you want. This document shows you how.

Predefined categories

Almost every time that amazOOP queries AWS it has to send a mode parameter. The mode corresponds to the section of the Amazon site you want to query. This is a list of modes officially supported by AWS:

Product Line US mode parameter UK mode parameter DE mode parameter JP mode parameter
Books books books-uk books-de books-jp
Popular Music music music pop-music-de music-jp
Classical Music classical classical classical-de classical-jp
DVD dvd dvd-uk dvd-de dvd-jp

Electronics electronics electronics-uk ce-de electronics-jp
Kitchen & Housewares kitchen kitchen-uk kitchen-de NA

Camera & Photo photo NA NA NA
Baby baby NA NA NA
Outdoor Living garden NA NA NA
Computers pc-hardware NA NA NA
Tools & Hardware tools NA NA NA
English/Foreign Books NA NA books-de-intl-us books-us

I find this too complicated, so with amazOOP, I introduced categories which are ment to simplify AWS modes, and allow you to customize amazOOP as much as you want. First, take a look at what the table above looks like to an amazOOP user:

Product Line US mode parameter UK mode parameter DE mode parameter JP mode parameter
Books books books books books
Popular Music music music music music
Classical Music classical classical classical classical
DVD dvd dvd dvd dvd
Video vhs vhs vhs vhs
Electronics electronics electronics electronics electronics
Kitchen & Housewares kitchen kitchen kitchen NA

* Note: as of the writing of this document, these categories are not officially supported by AWS, but they work.

As you can see, amazOOP categories are more intuitive and a lot easier to remember because they the same for all locales.

Another benefit of amazOOP's categories is that you can create your own! For example, amazOOP included already some custom categories when you downloaded it:

Product Line US mode parameter UK mode parameter DE mode parameter JP mode parameter
Spansih Books books_es NA books_es NA
Spanish Music music_es NA NA NA
Spanish Software software_es NA NA NA
French Books NA NA books_fr NA
Italian Books NA NA books_it NA
